Course Philosophy:
 
People with Asperger’s Syndrome see the world differently, and this course attempts to integrate this view alongside the prevailing culture, norms and expectations. As children develop and get older, accommodation of their perspective generally along with the Enhancement of existing underdeveloped skills specifically can be useful. It is usually better to focus on strengths than deficits.

Course Aims:
 
This course aims to provide the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to work with Asperger’s Syndrome in a positive and effective way.

What the course covers:
 
An overview of the nature of Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. Including diagnostic criteria, genetic factors, viewing Asperger’s as a spectrum, diagnostic controversies and profiles of individuals who display traits of Asperger’s Syndrome.

Assessment, prognosis and longer term outlook. Including an overview of assessment and screening measures, the developmental stages when diagnosis is often made and consideration of co-morbid conditions.

The most common difficulties, challenges and frustrations encountered.

The RAID philosophy as applied to Asperger’s Syndrome. Key concepts in the RAID approach, and how they apply. Especially: noticing adaptive behavior and nurturing it; playing down ‘difficult’ behavior as far as is reasonable (with examples) etc.

Case study: especially illustrating the interaction between communication, language and emotion Asperger’s Syndrome.

Educational Issues, including goal setting.

Relationship and Social Skills, and how to enhance and develop them.

Case study, especially addressing the management of difficult behavioral issues.

Group interventions for Asperger’s Syndrome; both for individuals and for carers.

Assimilation Exercise, Quiz and registration.
