Overview:
'Mood altering substances' have been around virtually since the dawn of time, so perhaps there is every reason to accept them as part of our repertoire. Nevertheless, for some people, the maladaptive use of such compounds devastates their lives. Initially a pleasurable diversion, the substance in question may gradually acquire a dominant part in the person's life, insidiously wreaking havoc on relationships, finances, career, and threatening the very continuation of their lives. And it is a difficult course to reverse; hence the need for a structured and evidence-based approach from those who aim to help.
.......................................................................................................................................................................
What this course will do for you:
• You will know about different mood altering substances and their effects.
• You will be familiar with the major CBT techniques for substance misuse and how to
apply them with your own patients.
• You will know how this corresponds with current NICE guidelines.
.......................................................................................................................................................................
The Course covers:
• Why substance misuse is important: the prevalence of substance misuse, the effect it
has on people, the criminal activity it causes.
• Harm reduction/minimization: the concept, the dangers associated with drug use, the
effects of injecting, infections that can be acquired, and harm reduction interventions.
• Case conceptualization: an exercise involving a case conceptualization of a moderately
complex client.
• Live exercise where the tutor takes the role of a patient and volunteers from the group
interview and treat him.
• Motivational enhancement: clinical methods. Methods based on the work of Miller
and Rollnick and also DiClemente et al, and the interlinking between the two. The use
of motivational enhancement strategies in clinical practice. Self motivational statements, generating them and using them to the client's advantage. The different types of SMS
and how they link with the stages of change. Responding to SMS's.
• Hazards in the treatment of substance misuse.
• How to give information and advice in a way that proves useful rather than
disempowering. Decisional balance and how to use it rightly (and wrongly).
• Action planning and homework setting.
• The role of support and encouragement.
• Behavioral couples therapy, the work of O'Farrell and Fals-Stewart, now recommended
by NICE. The four objectives of BCT; who is suitable for BCT; the characteristics of
successful BCT therapists, how to engage patient and spouse in BCT. The recovery
contract: the daily trust discussion, the calendar, the different sessions. Other support
for abstinence, improving the relationship between the couple, increasing positive
activities, communication skills.
• Maintenance and relapsed prevention.
• Group simulation exercise, using the information back at work.
Course Methods include lecture, discussion, video material, case analysis and practice exercises.
