Available in 2-day and 3-day versions. (What’s the difference?).

Background:
Substance Misuse in the UK is a major mental health problem. It can cause massive disruption to the life of the sufferer and also to those around him or her. The evidence suggests that it is an increasingly prevalent problem in the UK that needs actively addressing.
.....................................................................................................................................................................
Aims:
The aims of this course are to (a) introduce participants to the nature of abused substances, what their effects are, what the prevalence of misuse is etc. and, more particularly, (b) to equip participants with the most effective techniques for effective intervention.
.....................................................................................................................................................................
The course covers:
• The range of misused substances. What they look like, what their effects are, who takes
them, and how they are referred to, colloquially and technically.
• The nature of addiction.
• Deciding when it is and is not realistic to work with a person.
• Initial assessment, case conceptualization and measurement of progress.
• How to respond to people who clearly do have a misuse problem but deny it.
• Working with people who admit they have a problem and will discuss it with you, but fail
to do anything about it.
• Helping a person prepare realistic plans for overcoming their misuse.
• The role of self-help groups in misuse.
• How to support a person in implementing a feasible plan of action.
• Filling the gap: many people's lives have become partly to depend upon their misuse.
Taking away the misuse removes a large part of their lives. What now?
• The maintenance stage. Once 'cured' the mistake is to pull out; how to help the person
maintain their new-found improvement.
• Capitalising on the ambivalence that people feel about giving up or reducing their
misuse.
• How genuinely to persuade people of the benefits of resolving their problems.
• The role of motivational interviewing.
• How to notice – and generate – “self-motivational statements”.
• How to deal with resistance from clients.
• How to give advice in a way that is likely to be accepted.
• How to develop your own empathy for the client, and why this is important.
• The concept of 'self-efficacy' and how to develop this in the client.
• Being aware of the major traps in substance misuse, and how to avoid them.
• The APT Essentials Series of Courses eg. affirming and summarizing.
• The important difference between a lapse and a relapse and how to respond to each.
