A 3-day course covering:

•  Brain anatomy. An overview of the brain, the left and right hemispheres and their
functions, the frontal lobe, dysexecutive syndrome, the parietal, temporal and occipital
lobes. The functions of each of the lobes, and what symptoms occur when each is
  damaged.

•  Brain function. Perception, including recognition disorders (e.g. the inability to recognize
faces). Memory, including short and long term memory and also ‘prospective’ memory
(remembering to do things). Language impairment, movement disorders.

•  Dementia. Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, lewy body dementia and
fronto-temporal dementia. Dementia-like symptoms not caused by dementia and how
they may be treated. The diagnosis and management of dementia. Drugs for Alzheimer’s
disease. Suitable activities. Sexual difficulties. Coping with unusual behavior.

•  Helping carers and relatives in looking after people with dementia.

•  Strokes. What are they? The two crucially different causes, and the range of deficits that
may occur as a result. Rehabilitation. Why ‘practicing’ remembering tends to be
remarkably ineffective whilst using some memory aids can produce very good results.

•  Aphasia, apraxia and agnosia. Typical symptoms and effective interventions to overcome
them as far as possible. Case examples.

•  End of course quiz and action-planning.

•  Registration and continuing professional development.
