SFT Essentials (Solution-Focused Therapy training)

SFT Essentials is a 3-day course from the Association for Psychological Therapies (APT), a leading provider of Solution-Focused Therapy training for professionals working in mental health and related fields in Canada. SFT Essentials is the benchmark for professionals who want an excellent introduction to SFT which will enable them to understand it and use it straight away. It is also the gateway to further SFT training including APT’s SFT Masterclass.
It gives you APT’s level one Accreditation in SFT, with the option of sitting an exam to obtain level two (free of charge) and from there through more study right up to APT's SFT Masterclass and level four Accreditation.

Executive Summary:
Solution-Focused Therapy can seem a refreshingly easy therapy to conduct, and to be the recipient of. This is because many of its techniques capitalize on circuits in the brain that already exist. Utilising these, rather than trying to develop new circuits by discussion and experimentation, often achieves results that are rapid, fundamental, and stable.
This course therefore teaches the principles and practice of Solution-Focused Therapy in a way that delegates can - and will want to - use with their own caseload.

- What is Solution-Focused Therapy? An examination of its background, history, definitions and current usage. Includes video of Bill Hanlon.
- The miracle question, and other powerful questions to ask to help patient move in the direction they want.
- Finding a solvable problem; asking solution-focused questions so that answering them produces the solution to the problem rather than simply elaborating it.
- How the solutions that clients adopt sometimes fuel the problem, and how to introduce new solutions.
- ‘Victor’: a video case analysis.
- Assessment and the first session or two.
- How to structure SFT treatment sessions with individuals.
- Informal SFT: how to use SFT strategies in everyday interactions.
- An exercise (one session on each of the first two days) where the tutor takes the role of a patient and the group has the chance to interview using SFT techniques and strategies.
- Exploring for solutions the client already has but only uses occasionally. Finding ‘the template for success’.
- Chair work: especially enabling patients to clarify their problems and give themselves effective advice.
- Practice-based evidence: evaluating progress (in a solution focused way).
- The use of (anecdotes, parables and) metaphor in therapy. Why they work so effectively and how to generate them. The importance of imagery.
- Re-framing the problem; seeing the problem in a different light can sometimes radically alter its effect. Video: Kelly McGonigal.
- The changing of failing strategies. The paradox whereby some patients (and professionals) will indulge in more rather than less of a failing strategy. Changing to successful strategies.
- Exercise to illustrate the use of Brief, Solution Focused Therapy in that delegates’ own work setting.
- The Ladder: how to motivate patients to address the logical steps necessary to achieve what they want.
- Where to from here? How to capitalize on the course.

What you receive as a result of attending the training:
You will be registered as having attended the course, thereby gaining APT's Level 1 accreditation, and receive a certificate to this effect. The accreditation gives you access to online resources associated with the course and access to the online exam if you wish to uprate your APT accreditation to Level 2.
Your registration lasts indefinitely, whilst your accreditation lasts for 3 years from the date of completion and is renewable.
