APT Registration

APT Registration Levels in Motivational Interviewing (MI).

The Association for Psychological Therapies offers the following levels of registration for professionals who complete APT training in Motivational Interviewing, or equivalent training verified by APT.

The purpose of the system is to provide a clear and transparent record of the level of Motivational Interviewing training you have completed, and to make that record meaningful to employers, commissioners, and professional colleagues.

APT training is post-qualification training. Registration at any level confirms that you have completed training at that level; it does not replace your core professional qualification, your professional registration, supervision, experience, or employer/professional governance requirements.

APT’s registration system has weight because over 150,000 professionals have attended APT training, with many registered as having completed APT’s Delegate-Accredited training at levels ranging from 1 to 4, from introductory to advanced.

You might consider Levels 1 to 3 as being where you are acquainting yourself with the subject, though at increasing levels of sophistication.

At Level 4, you might reasonably describe yourself as specialising in the subject, always assuming that you have a relevant underpinning professional qualification, such as psychology, psychiatry, mental health nursing, occupational therapy, social work, counselling, psychotherapy, or another relevant professional qualification.

The levels below refer to the registration you acquire by attending APT training, or by submitting a record of equivalent training you have received elsewhere for verification by APT. Any such training must have been completed within the last three years.

APT's Delegate Accreditation - Level 1

APT Registration, Level 1 in Motivational Interviewing is the level of registration you obtain by attending APT’s Delegate-Accredited Motivational Interviewing, and how to use it effectively course.

Your registration entitles you to access related online resources for three years, and this access is renewable by attending a refresher course, completing an online refresher or by submitting evidence of practice and reflections thereon. (There is a form available for this, click here.)

APT's Delegate Accreditation - Level 2

APT Registration, Level 2 in Motivational Interviewing means you have received training as in Level 1, and also passed the APT's online exam in Motivational Interviewing.

Your registration lasts for 3 years from the date you completed Motivational Interviewing, and how to use it effectively or equivalent, and is renewable by sitting and passing the online exam again and paying the prevailing fee.

APT's Delegate Accreditation - Level 3

APT Registration, Level 3
in Motivational Interviewing means that you have Level 2 registration and:

- Either have attended at least a further three days of APT-approved training in Motivational Interviewing, or a qualifying course. Qualifying courses from APT include: Solution-Focused Therapy Essentials, The ADDRESS® Course for working with Personality Disorder, DBT Essentials, and Compassion-Focused Therapy Essentials.

- Or can submit evidence of having undertaken formally supervised practice of MI for at least 6 months since attending Motivational Interviewing, and how to use it effectively, or equivalent training.

Best Practice is to refresh or review your knowledge after 2-3 years, so your registration is renewable by submitting evidence of practice and reflections on that practice, with the prevailing reading fee. (There is a form available for this, click here.)

APT's Delegate Accreditation - Level 4

APT Registration, Level 4 in Motivational Interviewing means you have Level 3 registration and have attended a minimum of at least three additional days of Delegate-Accredited training, which will probably be the Motivational Interviewing Masterclass or equivalent.

This is a substantial level: very few professionals aim beyond this point. Best Practice is to refresh or review your knowledge after 2-3 years, so your registration is renewable by submitting evidence of practice and reflections on that practice, with the prevailing reading fee. (There is a form available for this, click here.)

Important note:

APT registration confirms that the professional has completed the relevant level of APT’s Delegate-Accredited training, or equivalent training verified by APT. It does not in itself constitute a professional qualification or licence to practise. Delegates remain responsible for working within their own professional governance arrangements.
