The APT Diploma in Child & Adolescent Mental Health provides 90 hours (or more) of focused training and is from the Association for Psychological Therapies (APT), a leading provider of training for professionals working in mental health and related areas in Canada.
Founded in 1981, APT has grown to become a trusted source of gold-standard training. Over 150,000 mental health professionals have attended APT's post-qualification courses, commissioned by numerous health authorities and healthcare providers.
It is the only Child & Adolescent Mental Health Diploma that is APT Delegate Accredited and uniquely combines built-in APT Registration with automatic access to our renowned post-course resources to help you support your clients. It is available for teams and individuals, face-to-face or online.
Executive Summary:
The APT Diploma in Child & Adolescent Mental Health provides 90 hours (or more) of training, leading to Level 4 APT Registration. Attend the diploma as an individual or we can bring the training to you for a fixed fee, to ensure you get a supportive group addressing the same material.
The diploma comprizes at least 15 days of training made up by attending your chosen courses from the list below (e.g. five 3-day courses). If you are part of a team then your team/organization chooses the courses and you then all attend the same ones:
- DBT for Adolescents (DBT-A) (3 days) *
- Running DBT Skills-Development Groups (3 days)
- CBT Essentials (3 days) *
- The Assessment & Risk Assessment of Children & Adolescents in Crisis™ (3 or 2 days)
- The RAID® Course for working with Disturbed and Challenging Behaviour (3 days) *
- Trauma-Focused CBT, for all ages (3 days) *
- Attachment in Practice™ (3 days)
- Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) - Repairing the Damage™ (3 days) *
- SFT Essentials (Solution-Focused Therapy) (3 days) *
- ADHD Across the Lifespan: Key Knowledge and Skills for Effective Intervention (3 days)
- Motivational Interviewing, and how to use it effectively (3-days) *
- or Motivational Interviewing with Children and Adolescents (3-days)
- CBT with Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: There Must Be A Better Way® (2 days) *
- Single-Session Therapy (2-days) *
- Graded Exposure Therapy (1 day)

To be awarded the diploma, you must also complete an online exam after each course.
If you have already attended one or more of these courses in the last 2 years, then you have an exemption for that subject(s), you don't need to attend the same course again. If you have already attended the equivalent of one or more of these courses from another training-provider in the last 2 years, then again you have an exemption for that subject(s), although you do need to submit evidence of the training and pay a reading fee for APT to assess it.
Please note that the diploma should be completed within 2 years from the date you undertake the first course.
The diploma can be achieved either by enrolling on the full programme, or by purchasing and completing the individual qualifying courses separately over the 2-year period.
What you receive as a result of attending the training:
You will be registered as having attended the course, thereby gaining The APT Diploma for working in Child & Adolescent Mental Health, and receive a certificate to this effect and Level 4 APT Registration which gains you access to the resources associated with the course.
Your registration lasts indefinitely, and your accreditation to use the resources lasts for 3 years and is renewable by attending a Masterclass top-up day or submitting evidence of continued practice, and your reflections on that practice (to the required level).
